First time visiting the Netherlands? This is the place to begin. We’ve gathered the essentials — where to go, what to eat, when to come, and how to see the country the way locals actually live it.
The essentials
- Amsterdam — the obvious starting point, but there’s more than the Red Light District and the Anne Frank House. The real Amsterdam is in the quiet canals of Jordaan and the cafés of De Pijp.
- The hidden villages — Giethoorn, Volendam, Marken, Edam. Most tourists skip them. They shouldn’t.
- Windmills and canals — not just a postcard cliché. Kinderdijk, Zaanse Schans, and the countryside around Alkmaar are essential.
- Tulip season — if you can come in April, come in April. Keukenhof is magical; the fields themselves are more so.
- Real Dutch food — beyond stroopwafels and pancakes. Bitterballen, haring, erwtensoep, and why the Dutch take their coffee so seriously.
When to visit
April for tulips, May–June for the long light, September for the colours. Avoid July and August if you can — they’re beautiful but crowded. Winter is underrated; the canals can freeze, and the museums are empty.
